This supplemental pack is aligned to the Journeys 2011/2012, 2014, and 2017 curriculum for 5th grade. Upon opening the zip file, simply select the lesson that matches the publication year of your curriculum.

This Journeys Grade 5 supplemental pack is created to supplement Unit 5, Lesson 25 (Lewis and Clark.) The reading responses, activities, and interactive notebook pages focus on the Reading Literature and Language sections of the curriculum.

These pages were designed to be engaging to students, yet rigorous. The fonts are interesting but easy to read, interactive notebook pages are included, and students are given opportunities to color and cut & paste. Students must have access to the text as they work, as many pages require text evidence.

Students love these interactive pages! Don't worry if you do not use Interactive Notebooks in your classroom. The interactive pages in this lesson can be glued onto notebook paper or construction paper. You can even staple a "notebook" of lined paper for them to use with their Journeys lessons! They'll love this new way of demonstrating their learning.

• Main Idea and Details Web – Students complete the graphic organizer, noting the main idea and details as they read. (2014 & 2017)
• Main Idea and Details – Students write 2 main ideas from the text. They support these main ideas with details from the story. (2014 & 2017)
• Supporting the Main Idea - Students support the 2 main ideas provided with details from the story. (2014 & 2017)
• Author's Purpose - Students complete the graphic organizer, noting the author's purpose and supporting the purpose with details from the text. (2011/2012)
• Supporting the Author's Purpose (1) - Students supporting the author's purpose with details from the text. (2011/2012)
• Supporting the Author's Purpose (2) - Students supporting the author's purpose with details from the text. (2011/2012)
• Monitor and Clarify – Students monitor their own understanding of their reading. They respond to prompts such as: I wonder...I’m confused by...How...I don’t understand...
• Primary Sources - Students look for 3 examples of primary sources in the text. They copy these examples into a table and then write about why the author may have chosen to include the primary sources in the story.
• Lewis and Clark Text Questions – Students use details from the story to answer text-dependent comprehension questions.
• A Surprise Reunion Text Questions - Students use evidence from the text to answer comprehension questions about the play.
• Essential Question – Students journal write, answering the essential question, “How did explorers help America become the country it is today?”

Language Supplements:
• Vocabulary Word Wall Words – The 10 vocabulary words are printed in large, in black & white, to be printed and hung in the classroom.
• Dictionary Definitions and Sentence Writing - Students define each word using the glossary. Then, they write each vocabulary into a sentence that shows they understand the meaning of the word.
• Vocabulary: Antonyms - Students match each vocabulary word to its antonym.
• Analogies - Students use the words from the word bank to complete the analogies. They use what they know about analogies to complete three open-ended examples at the end of the page.
• Spelling List – 2 to a page, to be printed and cut apart
• Spelling Words 3 Times Each - Students write their spelling words 3 times each.
• Spelling: Triangles - Students write their spelling words, one letter at a time so that they take the shape of triangles.
• Contractions - Students cut and paste each contraction next to the words it represents. They color the contraction according to whether it’s a verb plus not OR a pronoun plus a verb. (2014 & 2017)
• Proper Mechanics - Students correct the punctuation in each sentence, and color the sentences punctuated correctly. (2011/2012)
